How Many Calories Is That?

This is an exercise students would use when they are learning about nutrition. In this lesson students need to research their favorite fast food restaurant, then the students will decided what they would eat for a normal meal at this restaurant. They will find the calories for each item they would eat, they could do this for multiple places as well. Excel can total the amount of calories the student would have in that meal alone. This is a great way for students, especially beginners, use Excel and its an interesting way to learn about food and nutrition.

This is not a spreadsheet but this is where I got the idea and it gives more detailed instructions.

  1. That's pretty cool to incorpurate nutriotion into excel work but you can also go further instead of just doing what calories a resturant gives they can research how many calories their bodies need a day and add in the resturant's food then make a chart using the function signs on excel and graphs to see how many calories they have let for the day and see how much of their daily caloric intake was taken up by just fast food. They can see the toll fast food takes on their bodies. Also go further with protien, sugar , and sodium counts. That would be cool to see how it affects the graph. Just a thought :)

  2. This is sweet, and what if we incorporated your idea and my idea. Play 60, along with watching diet. Kill 2 birds with one stone! yes. I love the idea of charting what they eat so they can be aware and make changes. That is what they can do with playtime as well. If they do not eat right or do not play enough they will know it from the data.

  3. I think this is a great idea! You can learn the functions of SUM and even use AVERAGE to see the average number of calories were consumed in each day, and over time! Because let's face it, we don't always eat EXACTLY 2000 calories a day! I also think that it will be surprising to see which foods have lots or few calories. For instance, where I work, I know for a FACT that one of our dishes is 1500 calories!!! Not including drink, salad, or breadsticks--WOW huh? :) It's still yummy, though!!
